Bulger girlfriend pleads guilty

BOSTON, March 14 (UPI) -- The girlfriend of gangster James "Whitey" Bulger pleaded guilty Wednesday in Boston to helping him elude capture for more than a decade.

Catherine Greig, 60, made the plea in federal court in Boston after a brief statement by the brother of one of the 19 people allegedly murdered by Bulger, The Boston Globe reported.

The brother, Steve Davis, called on the judge to consider his family's pain and disregard Greig's tears when it comes to sentencing. "She's not what she appears to be," he said. "She's a monster."

U.S. District Judge Douglas Woodlock asked Greig if she understood there was no deal on the sentence she would receive. "I'm not bound by sentencing guidelines," the Globe quoted him as saying.

Greig answered, "I do, your honor."

The judge set a sentencing hearing for June 12.

U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz said prosecutors didn't know yet what sentence they would recommend, but it would be "significant." The Globe said Ortiz rejected any suggestion prosecutors were too lenient on her. "There was no deal, certainly no sweetheart deal."

An international manhunt ended when Greig and Bulger, 82, were arrested in June in Santa Monica, Calif.

Greig pleaded guilty to conspiracy to harbor a fugitive, conspiracy to commit identity fraud and identity fraud. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
