Defense rests in webcam spy trial

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J., March 12 (UPI) -- The defense rested Monday in the New Jersey trial of a former Rutgers student accused of using a webcam to spy on his roommate, who later committed suicide.

Attorneys for Dharun Ravi wrapped up their side of the case after calling nine witnesses in two days, but without putting Ravi on the stand to testify in his own defense, The (Newark) Star-Ledger reported.

Closing arguments are scheduled for Tuesday in Superior Court, the newspaper said.

Ravi is on trial for 15 counts of invasion of privacy, bias intimidation and hindering apprehension. He could be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in prison if found guilty of spying on his roommate, Tyler Clementi.

Authorities alleged Ravi activated his webcam remotely on Sept. 19, 2010, saw his roommate kissing a male guest, and then tweeted what he had seen. He also tried to set up the webcam a second time a few days later, and invited others to watch via twitter, authorities allege.

Clementi committed suicide a few days after the alleged spying. Ravi is not charged in his death.
