Seven others were injured in the shooting, including a University of Pittsburgh police officer whose leg was grazed by a bullet, the newspaper said. The injured were being treated across the street from the clinic at UPMC Presbyterian.

One official told the newspaper a University of Pittsburgh police officer shot and killed the gunman. There was no information on the identity of the other person who was killed.

"What we're worrying about right now is patient care and taking care of all the wounded people," Wood said.

SWAT teams from Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Port Authority and state police, along with bomb-sniffing dogs, were called in to search Thomas Detre Hall.

The names of the dead were not released.
