JOLIET, Ill., March 8 (UPI) -- A Joliet, Ill. man was found guilty and sentenced to community service and given a nearly $4,000 fine for driving 96 mph while drunk.
Judge Cary B. Pierce Tuesday ordered Juan Gonzalez to perform 240 hours of community service and pay $3,615 in fines and court costs, The (Joliet, Ill.) Herald-News reported.
Gonzalez was stopped at about 2:05 a.m. on Aug. 19 when Police Sgt. John Westlove watched as the BMW Gonzalez was driving go through an intersection "at an extremely high rate of speed."
Westlove's radar unit indicated the car was traveling at 96 mph -- more than two times posted speed limit of 45 mph.
Gonzalez appeared to be drunk, Westlove said, adding that he failed a field sobriety test administered at the scene.
The suspect was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding 40 mph or more over the statutory limit and driving without insurance; he was found guilty on all the charges.
Gonzalez was also enrolled in a "Level 2 DUI monitoring" program and placed on 18 months of conditional probation.
