RALEIGH, N.C., March 6 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Sen. John Edwards has hired two more attorneys to defend him in the federal criminal case in which he is accused of violating campaign finance laws.
The Raleigh (N.C.) News & Observer identified the two Greensboro attorneys as Alan Duncan and Allison Van Laningham.
The attorneys had represented Rielle Hunter, with whom Edwards had an extramarital affair and a daughter, in her civil case against former campaign aide Andrew Young, who wrote a book about Edwards' presidential campaign, and his wife, Cheri Young.
Hunter had accused the Youngs of taking personal property, including a videotape that purportedly showed her engaged in sex with Edwards. The lawsuit was settled last month, with the videotape to be destroyed and other property to be returned.
Edwards' legal team did not elaborate on why the two attorneys had been added, and prosecutors could not be reached Monday, the News & Observer said.
Edwards faces felony charges of violating campaign finance laws by using contributions to help hide Hunter and her pregnancy during his 2008 presidential campaign.
