Handyman in Detroit murder case arraigned

DETROIT, March 5 (UPI) -- A man arrested in the death of a Detroit woman was arraigned Monday and charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Joseph Gentz, a handyman, was arrested Friday in the death of advertising executive Jane Bashara, who was found shot to death in her car in January. Gentz told Grosse Pointe Park police her husband Robert Bashara promised him less than $2,000 and a used Cadillac to kill her, The Detroit News reported

Gentz was arrested at the Macomb County Courthouse, where he attended a child custody hearing involving his 10-year-old daughter. He was driven there by a friend, Steve Virgona, who said Gentz confessed the killing to him.

The arraignment came Monday via video before Magistrate Laura Echartea. Gentz attorney Susan Reed requested a competency hearing, the newspaper reported.

Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney Kym Worthy said in a statement the investigation was still under way.

"This case is neither cold nor closed," Worthy said.
