LOS ANGELES, March 4 (UPI) -- A man convicted of murder allegedly piled up more than $30,000 in jobless benefits with the help of family and friends, authorities in Los Angeles allege.
Anthony Garcia, whose prosecution for murder was helped along by the slaying scene he had tattooed on his chest, is now accused of having his father and two women cash his $1,600-a-month government checks while he sat in jail, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.
A Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office spokesman said the alleged accomplices, Juan Garcia, 47, Sandra Jaimez, 45, and Cyntia Limas, 25, are accused of depositing some of the money in the younger Garcia's jail account and sharing some with Garcia's fellow gang members, who also were in jail, the newspaper said.
The trio of alleged accomplices were charged with unemployment fraud and related charges Thursday. It wasn't known whether Garcia would face additional charges.
"It's pretty appalling when you think about somebody sitting in jail collecting unemployment," Sheriff's Office Capt. Mike Parker said.
