CHARDON, Ohio, March 3 (UPI) -- More than 1,000 people attended a funeral mass Saturday for one of the victims of the school shooting in Chardon, Ohio.
Daniel Parmertor, 16, was the first of the three Chardon High School students to be killed and the first to be buried, The Plain Dealer of Cleveland reported. A Catholic service was held at St. Mary Church near the high school.
"We should not be here," the Rev. Timothy Kalista said in his homily. "We should not be having a mass for a high school student ... who has a zest for life."
A 17-year-old, T.J. Lane, has been charged with shooting Parmertor, Demetrius Hewlin, 16, and Russell King Jr., 17, in a shooting spree Monday in the school cafeteria. Parmertor was pronounced dead at the scene, Hewlin died Tuesday in a hospital and doctors pronounced King brain dead Tuesday.
Organs from all three victims were donated to give others a chance at life, WYTV in Youngstown, Ohio, reported.
As Parmertor's funeral cortege proceeded from the church to All Souls Cemetery 4 miles away, groups of people gathered to show support as it went by, the Plain Dealer said. A boy held up a sign, "Rest in Peace," on a corner near a house occupied by Lane's family.
The teenagers who served as pallbearers broke down after reaching the cemetery, weeping as a bagpiper played a final farewell.
