Witness says web cam was for security in Dharun Ravi trial

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J., Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Dharun Ravi installed a camera in his Rutgers University dorm room to insure his belongings were secure, a Rutgers student testified in court Monday.

The case of invasion of privacy, bias intimidation and hindering apprehension against Ravi, which made headlines in 2010 when his roommate Tyler Clementi committed suicide several days after the alleged spying incident, continued in Middlesex County Courthouse in New Brunswick, N.J., with the testimony of student Pooja Kolluri, who was with a group of students that night in a nearby room, The (Newark) Star-Ledger said.

"He said that his roommate asked for the (dorm) room from 9 to 12 and that he didn't know why, so he set up his web cam to make sure his things weren't touched," Kolluri said. She also says Ravi sought to confirm his roommate was gay.

Molly Wei, who was initially arrested with Ravi, testified Monday she was surprised to see Clementi and another man, kissing onscreen.

"Initially we were saying how we couldn't tell anyone what had just happened. We saw something we didn't expect to see and it just felt weird," she testified.

The jury also heard from university official William O'Brian, who said Clementi requested a room change about 30 hours after the alleged web cam incident. An enlarged image of the filled-out university form was shown the jurors, with the reason for the request blacked out.
