Romney says he's just a car guy

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney pressed the flesh at Daytona International Speedway in Florida Sunday.

"This combines a couple of things I like best, cars and sports" the former Massachusetts governor said, USA Today reported. Romney talked to drivers, crew chiefs, team owners and many chief executive officers and executives from Sprint Cup sponsors in a pre-race meeting. "I appreciate the spirit of the men and women driving. This is a chance to look at the great qualities of the American spirit, it's quintessentially American. I love what you're doing and wish you the best."

Meanwhile, Tony Raines was driving a car, No. 26, festooned with Romney rival Rick Santorum logos for the rain-delayed Daytona 500.

The Detroit News reported the United Auto Workers would have a plane fly a banner over the race bringing up Romney's opposition to the U.S. auto bailout.
