Naked fire truck driver kills pedestrian

BEAUFORT, S.C., Feb. 25 (UPI) -- A naked South Carolina man stole in a fire truck and drove it into several vehicles and fatally struck a pedestrian before crashing into a tree, police allege.

The Beaufort Gazette reported Kalvin Hunt, 26, of Sumter was hospitalized Saturday and would be charged with multiple counts once he is released.

The pedestrian who died in the 4:30 p.m. Friday incident was identified as Justin Nicholas Miller, 28, of Port Royal, the newspaper said.Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen said Miller, who was walking with his brother, stepped off the curb to pick up something off the pavement when he was hit.

Hunt allegedly climbed behind the wheel of the fire truck while firefighters were answering a medical call at an apartment.

Police said after the fire truck came to a halt up against the tree, Hunt fought with two Beaufort police officers and a paramedic briefly before he was arrested.

He was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries sustained in the crash, and remained hospitalized Saturday, Beaufort Deputy Police Chief Dale McDorman said.

WTOC-TV, Savannah, Ga., reported Hunt's family said he is a former Marine who suffers from mental illness and was off his medication.
