Rwandan woman on trial for genocide lie

CONCORD, N.H., Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Witnesses from Rwanda were expected to testify about genocide at the New Hampshire trial of an immigrant who allegedly lied when she entered the United States.

A jury was selected Wednesday to hear Beatrice Munyenyezi's case in U.S. District Court in Concord, WMUR-TV, Manchester, reported. Lawyers were scheduled to give opening statements Thursday.

Munyenyezi, 41, came to the United States in 1995 and became a citizen in 2003. Federal prosecutors say she committed fraud on her applications for entry and for citizenship by failing to disclose that she ordered rapes and killings during the 1994 genocide.

Prosecutors say Munyenyezi was a member of an extremist group and that her husband is a former militia leader sentenced last year to life in prison.

Many of the witnesses will be brought to New Hampshire from Rwanda. They are expected to testify about the three-month killing spree that left 800,000 people dead, most of them Tutsis killed by Hutus.
