Fla. woman shot in church dies of wounds

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Feb. 19 (UPI) -- A young Florida woman has died a week after she was accidentally shot in the head during services at her father's church.

Hannah Kelley, 20, died of her wound Saturday at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.

Kelley never regained consciousness after being struck in the head when a gun belonging to a parishioner at Grace Connection Church went off accidentally. The owner of the 9mm handgun was showing it to two other men, including Kelley's fiance, when it discharged.

The Tampa Bay Times in St. Petersburg, Fla., said the owner of the gun had removed the magazine from the pistol but apparently forgot to clear the chamber. Church leaders said the owner of the gun, Moises Zambrana, 48, had been forgiven for the accident.

"The family has forgiven Mr. Zambrana and would ask that others treat him with love and grace," Kelley's family said in a statement released after the woman died. "The family would encourage mothers and fathers everywhere to hug their children a little tighter as you never know when it will be your last opportunity."

The Times said no charges have been filed against Zambrana.
