Girl innocent in shooting of father

HOUSTON, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- The shooting death of a Texas man by his 12-year-old daughter was ruled an act of self-defense by a jury in Harris County juvenile court.

The unnamed girl, now a teenager, shot her father, Mark Nelson, as he slept in their home in Katy, Texas.

Her four-week murder trial included testimony of numerous examples of sexual abuse by the father, an attempt to choke the girl before the shooting, and an encounter with her father while she bathed.

The Houston Chronicle reported she stood up to his assaults for the first time during the bathing incident, stayed in the bathtub until he went to sleep, then located the weapon and shot him.

Jurors were also presented with a picture of Nelson's history of violence, including choking incidents involving two other women.

After the verdict Monday, her attorney Windi Akins Pastorini said: "It's so right. This girl was too nice. She never would have done this if she didn't feel like her life was in danger."
