Allegations pile up against Conn. doctor

HARTFORD, Conn., Feb. 2 (UPI) -- More possible victims of a Connecticut doctor who was arrested for allegedly raping a patient have come forward with similar claims, police said.

Dr. Edwin A. Njoku, an East Hartford internist, was charged Tuesday with first-degree sexual assault, two counts of fourth-degree sexual assault, bribery of a witness and first-degree unlawful restraint for the alleged rape of patient Anolan Drago in October, The Hartford Courant reported Thursday. One of the sexual assault counts involves a second victim, court documents said.

Police said Wednesday they are interviewing about 15 to 20 women who have come forward with similar allegations against Njoku.

Njoku's arrest warrant showed his DNA was found on Drago and her clothing hours after she reported the assault to police. Drago told the Courant Njoku raped her when she met him at his office to obtain her medical files for her lawyer in a slip-and-fall case. She had been treated by Njoku for three years for back pain.

Njoku, formerly of Nigeria, was being held Wednesday in lieu of $825,000 bail. His lawyer, William Gerace, said the bail was "outrageous."

"The man's been in this country for 35 years and has a thriving medical practice," Gerace said.
