UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Five men convicted in the 2008 slaying of a U.N. worker in Kenya were sentenced to 56 years each in prison, the United Nations said Wednesday.
Silence Chirara, 37, a Zimbabwean national, was coordinating the U.N. World Food Program's logistics operation for South Sudan when he was ambushed and killed while driving a U.N. vehicle in the town of Lokichoggio, in northwest Kenya.
WFP chief Josette Sheeran applauded the Kenyan court's sentence of 56 years in prison for each of the men involved. "Nothing can be done to replace the life of this dedicated humanitarian and father, but justice has now been allowed to run its course," Sheeran said Wednesday in a statement. "These stiff prison sentences send an important message that those who harm humanitarian workers shall be brought to justice."
