WASHINGTON, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Alan Frumin, the long-time parliamentarian in the U.S. Senate, retires Tuesday and will be replaced by the first woman to hold the position, officials said.
Elizabeth MacDonough, now the senior assistant parliamentarian, will assume her role Wednesday as Senate parliamentarian, Roll Call reported Monday.
Frumin was parliamentarian twice, first in 1987, when he kept the position until 1995, and again in 2001. Both times, Roll Call said, he was preceded by Robert Dove, who was dismissed in 1987 by Majority Leader Robert Byrd, a Democrat, and again in 2001 by Majority Leader Trent Lott, a Republican.
