Romney considering dropping Brokaw ad

NEW YORK, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Mitt Romney's campaign reacted coolly to NBC's demand that it pull a Florida primary campaign ad featuring newsman Tom Brokaw.

A campaign spokesman told CBS that it had been contacted by NBC's legal department; however, he indicated they weren't pulling the plug right away as the Florida primary campaign reaches a climax.

"We just received the letter; we are reviewing it, but we believe it falls within fair use," senior adviser Eric Fehrnstrom said.

The commercial airing on Florida television stations uses NBC news footage featuring Brokaw to slam Romney's chief rival, Newt Gingrich, over his 1997 reprimand for ethics violation while he was in Congress.

"I am extremely uncomfortable with the extended use of my personal image in this political ad," Brokaw said in a written statement Saturday. "I do not want my role as a journalist compromised for political gain by any campaign."
