Fla. mayor surrenders on corruption charge

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla., Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Boynton Beach, Fla., Mayor Jose Rodriguez surrendered to charges of public corruption, police said.

Rodriguez was charged with accepting unlawful compensation for official behavior, as well as solicitation to commit unlawful disclosure of confidential criminal information and resisting or obstructing a law enforcement officer.

The charges are based on allegations of Rodriguez trying to obstruct a police investigation into a report of child abuse filed against him by his wife. He surrendered to the charges at the Palm Beach County Jail Thursday.

Rodriguez's attorney, Kenneth Lemoine, told the South Florida Sun Sentinel his client would fight the charges.

Rodriguez could be suspended from the office of mayor while the criminal case is pending.
