Texas gets much needed rain

HOUSTON, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Severe storms across south-central Texas have caused major problems for residents across the area, officials say.

High winds and 3 inches of rainfall in the Houston area Wednesday left the city with some flooding, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Meteorologists said a funnel cloud and high winds took out power lines in the area and damaged the roof of a shopping center.

There were no major traffic delays reported for Houston but crews were working to clear excess water off of highways.

Flooding was a severe problem for many areas, in central Texas, KXXW-TV, Waco, Texas, reported.

The possibility of hydroplaning coupled with poor visibility made driving very challenging. Strong winds knocked over trees in central Texas.

Potentially severe weather now threatens Mississippi and Alabama, Accuweather.com reported.

The risk of tornadoes comes days after tornadoes ripped through central Alabama, causing widespread damage and destruction.
