NEW YORK, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- A 56-year-old Jewish man in New York has been arrested and charged with a series of anti-Semitic hate crimes since December, police said.
David Haddad is accused of putting swastikas last week on the doors of several residents at Penn South, a Chelsea co-op where many elderly Jews live and where Haddad lives, and making an angry phone call to a resident there, The New York Times reported.
Haddad allegedly made several phone calls and uttered anti-Semitic threats to an 80-year-old Jewish woman in Brooklyn and made a similar call to a 78-year-old Jewish woman living nearby.
Haddad, who has been charged with aggravated harassment as a hate crime, knew all the victims and at least two of them are his relatives, police said.
The New York Daily News, citing sources, said a business dispute with family members may be the motive for the crimes.
Susan Levin, who lives down the hall from Haddad at Penn South, found the words "All Jews Should Die" on her front door.
"Knowing someone put swastikas and derogatory messages on my door makes me sick," Levin told the News.
Police say they're investigating whether Haddad painted swastikas on buildings during the weekend in a Brooklyn neighborhood where he has family.
