Abortion doctor waives extradition

SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- A doctor wanted in Maryland for a 2010 abortion that injured a teenage girl has waived extradition and will be returned to Maryland, authorities in Utah said.

Nicola I. Riley, 46, held without bond in a Salt Lake County jail, is charged with first and second-degree murder stemming from a procedure that involved the teen along with four late-term abortions, The Baltimore Sun reported Tuesday.

Riley and another doctor, Steven Brigham, are the first physicians charged under Maryland's fetal homicide law in a case involving a medical procedure.

Jeff Hall, Salt Lake County deputy district attorney, said Riley would be flown to Baltimore under police guard sometime in the next few days.

She will then be arraigned in Cecil County Crcuit Court.

Riley returned to her Utah home after the Maryland Board of Physicians suspended her medical license.
