CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Joseph P. Kennedy III, a member of Massachusetts' leading political dynasty, said Thursday he is considering a run for Congress.
Kennedy, the son of former Rep. Joe Kennedy, D-Mass., and grandson of Robert F. Kennedy, announced he is resigning as an assistant district attorney, The Boston Globe reported. He said he is forming an exploratory committee to seek the congressional seat now held by Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., and will announce in a few weeks whether he is a candidate.
"I am announcing today my intention to explore a candidacy for the United States Congress in the Fourth District of Massachusetts,'' he said in a statement.
Frank announced last year he is leaving Congress after 30 years.
If Kennedy makes the run, he would be the first in his generation of the family to enter elective politics. His grandfather and two great-uncles were U.S. senators and one became president of the United States, but his father's generation did not reach the same level.
Kennedy graduated from Stanford University and Harvard Law School and spent two years in the Peace Corps -- founded by President John F. Kennedy. He served as an assistant prosecutor on Cape Cod before joining the Middlesex County office outside Boston two years ago.
