Child's ashes stolen in burglary

WATERFORD, Mich., Jan. 4 (UPI) -- A Waterford, Mich., woman Wednesday offered a $1,000 reward to anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of an urn containing her son's ashes.

Wendy Turnquist lost her 12-year-old son Ryan McDonald in 2007 to a rare cell disease he battled from infancy. One of McDonald's last wishes was that he be cremated so that he could always remain near his mother. Wendy kept the urn at her bedside.

Wendy's husband David came home early from work on Friday day to find a smashed window and ransacked drawers. Nothing appeared to be missing other than the urn.

"I lost it," she told Detroit Free Press. "We had valuables, they weren't touched … I had men's gold rings -- could have easily been sold for gold."

Waterford Police Chief Daniel McCaw is conducting the investigation into the theft.

"It appears that someone may have known the family because that was the only thing that was stolen," he said.

The urn itself is stainless steel with four picture frames on each side with photos of McDonald and a psalm. Anyone with information should call the Waterford police anonymous tip line at 248-674-2677.
