New Year's Day shooting wounds boy, 12

RUSKIN, Fla., Jan. 1 (UPI) -- A 12-year-old Florida boy was in critical condition after being shot in the head by what authorities said may have been celebratory New Year's gunfire.

Sandra Duran, 38, said she saw her 12-year-old son Diego fall to the ground about 1 a.m. while watching a fireworks display with his family in the front yard of their Ruskin home, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

The mother didn't realize he had been shot until doctors at South Bay Hospital discovered a bullet had entered the top of his head. He was then transferred to Tampa General Hospital, the newspaper said.

Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said doctors had not yet removed the bullet.

Investigators said no one they had talked to reported hearing a gun being fired in the area at the time of the incident. They surmised the bullet may have been fallen from the sky after being fired from a distance, possibly miles away.
