Russell Means says he's cancer-free

RAPID CITY, S.D., Dec. 15 (UPI) -- American Indian activist Russell Means says in a video made in Arizona his esophageal cancer is in remission.

"I beat it. I beat cancer," Means said in the video posted Sunday on his Web site. "I'm essentially cancer-free."

Means, 72, said he underwent medical treatment including an advanced targeted radiation treatment as well as alternative and experimental health treatments in recent months in Scottsdale, the Rapid City (S.D.) Journal reported.

Means, who lives near Porcupine, S.D., was diagnosed with advanced esophageal cancer in July and doctors told him it was too advanced for surgical options, which would have left him unable to speak.

The tumor in his throat obstructed his speech and his ability to eat, but he is speaking clearly again after the treatments in Arizona, the Journal reported.

"The fight goes on. I'm $35,000 in debt, but things are looking up thanks to my oncologist," Means said in the video.
