LifeWay pulls pink Bibles

NASHVILLE, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- A Christian products store in Nashville says it will no longer sell a pink Bible because sales benefited a charity with ties to Planned Parenthood.

Southern Baptist-owned LifeWay Christian Resources pulled the Bibles from stores Wednesday after receiving complaints that the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation in Dallas has some local affiliates who donate funds to Planned Parenthood, The (Nashville) Tennessean reported.

"Though we have assurances that Komen's funds are used only for breast cancer screening and awareness, it is not in keeping with LifeWay's core values to have even an indirect relationship with Planned Parenthood," said Thomas Rainer, president of LifeWay.

The Bible had been in stores since October. Controversy over it began last week when pro-life Web sites began complaining.

"The sign might as well read, 'Buy a Bible and support abortion!'" wrote Susan Tyrrell of the Bound4Life.com blog.

Marty King, director of communications, said all funds raised so far from the pink Bible sales would go to the foundation for breast screenings only.
