Texas politicians settle defamation suit

TROPHY CLUB, Texas, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- A northern Texas politician has settled with her opponent, who she sued for defamation after he blamed her for a swastika that defaced his campaign billboard.

During Gregory Lamont and Kathleen Wilson's 2007 election race for city council in the wealthy Fort Worth suburb of Trophy Club, a swastika was slapped on a Lamont campaign billboard. Although Texas Rangers investigated the vandalism, no charges were ever made.

Wilson went on to defeat Lamont and in 2009 she sued, contending he defamed and slandered her by repeatedly blaming her for the defaced sign.

Her lawsuit was to go to trial this month in Denton County's 393rd District Court, but just a few days before that happened, Wilson and Lamont reached an agreement and ended the litigation, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Sunday.

Wilson was seeking at least $1 million in damages, including emotional distress, but the agreement is confidential so details of the settlement have not been revealed.

"There is a confidentiality agreement, and I cannot talk about the litigation or the other party," Lamont said.
