Killer refusing to eat

WAUKESHA, Wis., Nov. 23 (UPI) -- A man convicted in Wisconsin in the contract killing of his ex-girlfriend is refusing to communicate with jail staff and has stopped eating, prosecutors say.

Waukesha District Attorney Brad Schimel asked a judge to move Darren Wold's sentencing to next week from Dec. 20, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. Schimel suggested a state prison would be better able to provide the treatment Wold needs.

Wold's lawyers were unable to make the change so the sentencing remains as it was.

"I have been informed that after he returned to the jail from court after the guilty verdict [Nov. 2], he laid down in his bunk and has not gotten up since, other than to make a few phone calls with his parents," Schimel wrote.

Wold, 43, of Lubbock, Texas, and Jack E. Johnson, 67, of Mexico, both former Wisconsin residents, were convicted of arranging for a California man to kill Kimberly Smith, 39, who was stabbed in her Oconomowoc home in 2009. At the time, Wold and Smith were fighting for custody of their son.

Both men face automatic life sentences but could be given a chance for parole. Johnson's sentencing date has been move up from Dec. 9 to Dec. 2.

Justin Welch, 28, pleaded guilty in May to killing Smith, testified against the other two men and was sentenced to life in prison Nov. 10.

Schimel said he also believed it would be easier for Smith's family to have an earlier sentencing instead of a date just before Christmas.
