Prison dorms on lockdown after brawl

HELENA, Ga., Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Two dorms at Georgia's Telfair State Prison were on lockdown Tuesday following a fight Monday night, a spokeswoman for the department of corrections said.

Gwendolyn Hogan told WMAZ-TV, Macon, Ga., three inmates were taken to the hospital where two of them are reported in stable condition.

She said one staff member suffered a leg injury during the incident but no inmates escaped.

A news release issued by the department attributed the cause of the fight to illegal cell phones.

"Every day we fight the battle of keeping cell phones and other contraband out of our facilities," said Commissioner Brian Owens. "Inmates are using cell phones to commit additional crimes and carry out gun activity."
