Man bitten by pet cobra

RICHMOND, Va., Nov. 22 (UPI) -- A Virginia man was hospitalized in stable condition Tuesday after being bitten by his pet cobra, a police spokeswoman said.

Allison Quinones told WTVR-TV, Richmond, the victim was handling an albino monocled cobra at his home in Hampton, Va., when the snake bit his thumb.

Quinones said the man's hand was swollen and he was throwing up blood when police arrived.

He was taken to VCU Medical Center in Richmond where doctors determined the venom didn't enter his bloodstream. Anti-venom to treat the man had been flown in from Florida.

Police said the man owns several exotic snakes that he keeps locked in appropriate cages.
