Wash. man to be deported for war crimes

EVERETT, Wash., Nov. 16 (UPI) -- A Washington state man has agreed to be extradited to Bosnia to go on trial for allegedly taking part in the massacre of civilians during the Balkan War.

Edin Dzeko, who immigrated to the United States in 2001 and became a naturalized citizen in 2006, was a senior member of the Bosnian army during the 1992-95 war. He stands accused of killing 16 civilians and at least four unarmed soldiers in April 1993 in the village of Trusina, the Seattle Times reported Tuesday.

The extradition request says among other crimes, Dzeko allegedly threw one man out of his house and shot and killed him. He then shot and killed the man's grieving wife, the documents said.

Dzeko's attorney, David Gehrke, said the Everett man was "looking forward to returning to Bosnia-Herzegovina to face his accusers and confront the evidence against him."

Gehrke said evidence "could provide an alibi to the shootings of some of the soldiers."
