80 cats rescued from California home

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Authorities in San Diego County say 80 cats have been removed from the house of a woman whose home has been inspected several times for having too many felines.

When investigators with the San Diego County Department of Animal Services returned to her Mira Mesa home Monday, they said the situation had become deplorable and the cats had to be removed immediately, KGTV, San Diego, reported.

"It's depressing to hear that … that somebody has 80 cats in their house and they can't care for them all," Lt. Dan DeSousa said.

Investigators said the woman had being rescuing cats for years and her home was inspected several times.

"I can't believe it," neighbor John Levi said. "The houses are not that big and for 80 cats to be indoors it's the most unsanitary, cruel thing you can do to a cat."

The cats are being cared for at two local shelters, DeSousa said.

It may be a while before the cats are adoptable because the y are considered evidence in the case, he said.

"We have a lot of work cut for us to get these animals healthy and try and save them," he said.
