About 50 percent of Americans said they would support U.S. military action against Iran to prevent development of nuclear weapons compared with 44 percent who said they would oppose it.

The poll found 63 percent said they viewed Israel as a "crucial ally" of the United States and the relationship between the countries does not undermine America's image in the world.

More than seven of 10, 73 percent, said the United States could rely on Israel as a strong ally.

"The poll demonstrates once again that no matter the degree of change in the Middle East, the one constant is the American people's strong support for Israel," Abraham H. Foxman, ADL national director, said in a news release.

On Israeli-Palestinian relations, nearly half said they sympathize with Israel compared with 18 percent who said they sympathized with the Palestinians.
