SEATTLE, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Officials were trying to determine Wednesday how a lion managed to escape its den and wander into a service hallway at a Seattle zoo.

The 12-year-old female African lion escaped its sleeping den at Woodland Park Zoo some time after about 3:55 p.m. Tuesday. The zoo's emergency response team safely tranquilized the animal about 4:53 p.m., SeattlePI.com reported.

"The lion was contained inside the building and at no time were visitors or the staff in any danger," a news release from the zoo read.

The zoo's other lions, a 12-year-old male and a 2-year-old female, were secured in their dens during the incident.
