Detroit voters OK revised charter

DETROIT, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Detroit voters approved a new charter aimed at eliminating corruption and cronyism in city government, officials said.

The revised Detroit City Charter passed 58 percent to 42 percent Tuesday with a 10 percent voter turnout, The Detroit News reported.

The framework calls for electing council members by district instead of at large, establishing an inspector general to investigate corrupt behavior and requiring a one-year residency for anyone running for public office.

"It allows us to turn the page on our future and our past," Charter Commission Chairwoman Jenice Mitchell Ford told the News.

The 60-page document included 144 revisions culled from 570 proposals.
