Newark police detective shot, killed

NEWARK, N.J., Nov. 7 (UPI) -- A Newark, N.J., police detective was shot and killed outside a Paterson, N.J., strip club during an attempted robbery early Monday, police said.

The officer, whose name had not yet been released, was fatally wounded outside the Sunrise Lounge about 3 a.m. Monday, The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died shortly thereafter, Newark police Sgt. Ron Glover said.

"It's sad," said Derrick Hatcher, president of Newark's Fraternal Order of Police. "It really is."

Hatcher said he was unsure of the circumstances of the shooting.

The officer's death marks the third time a police officer has died in New Jersey in 2011 and the second in Newark.
