OAKLAND, Calif., Nov. 4 (UPI) -- A majority of the protesters arrested in Oakland, Calif., were from the city or from elsewhere in the San Francisco area, police said.

Police detained 103 people Thursday, 32 of them Oakland residents and 43 from the region, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Of the remaining 25, 15 were from California and 10 from as far away as New York and New Jersey.

The occupation of the plaza in front of Oakland City Hall turned violent Thursday, with some in the group starting fires, throwing rocks and bottles and trying to occupy a building.

While most of those arrested face minor charges and were either given tickets and released or held on $5,000 bail, three men were charged with battery on a police officer. Two were being held in lieu of $25,000 bail and the third on $15,000.
