Accused salon shooter confessed quickly

SEAL BEACH, Calif., Nov. 2 (UPI) -- The man charged in last month's mass shooting at a California hair salon told police spending time on the beach didn't dissuade him from his act.

A search warrant affidavit released by Orange County authorities this week said Scott Dekraai confessed soon after his arrest, telling police he argued with his ex-wife on the telephone the day of the shooting spree in Seal Beach and then spent some time alone on a nearby beach mulling over the idea of killing her.

Dekraai, 42, of Huntington Beach, is charged with shooting his ex and seven other people to death at the Salon Meritage in Seal Beach.

The Los Angeles Times said Dekraai told the arresting officer a short time later, "I know what I did."

Dekraai and ex-wife Michelle Fournier had a history of quarreling over custody of their 8-year-old son. He told police that after another fight on the day of the shootings, he donned a bulletproof vest and armed himself with three handguns and drove to Bolsa Chica State Beach where he apparently decided to kill Fournier.

Dekraai quickly admitted the shootings after his arrest, Detective Andrew Stowers said. Fournier worked at the salon and was styling the hair of a friend, Christy Lynn Wilson, who had testified against Dekraai at a child custody hearing and also was killed.

Stowers said Dekraai admitted shooting his wife several times and gunning down Wilson immediately afterwards. Stowers, a Westminster officer who was assisting the Seal Beach Police Department, said Dekraai made a confession to Seal Beach Detective Gary Krogman after being advised of his rights and then repeated it to Stowers.
