Reduced sentence granted to Miami rapist

MIAMI, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- A Miami man convicted in the brutal 1991 gang rape of a college student will be released from prison soon, thanks to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

Jacamo Ardon, 38, was re-sentenced Wednesday under a May 2010 Supreme Court ruling that banned life without parole for juveniles who did not kill anyone during their crimes, The Miami Herald reported.

Ardon, who was serving a life prison term, was sentenced to 30 years under a deal struck between prosecutors and defense attorneys. Extra years were taken off the sentence for good behavior during the 20 years he already served and he is likely to be out of jail in the coming weeks.

The federal government, however, is set to deport the man to his native Nicaragua.

A jury convicted Ardon in December 1991 for his participation in the gang rape.

Prosecutors said Ardon, then 17, walked up to the victim and forced her into a car at gunpoint. He and two others then drove to a rural area in northwest Miami-Dade, robbed her, then raped her for hours.

"Ardon walked up to her and completely terrorized her by pointing the gun and clicking it at her head in Russian-roulette style," a 1991 sentencing order states.

Ardon is the fourth convict to be re-sentenced in Miami-Dade and one of 26 re-sentenced statewide.
