Lawyer: Insanity may have led to twin kill

GALLATIN, Tenn., Oct. 26 (UPI) -- The lawyer for a Tennessee woman charged with killing her newborn twins suggested he is considering an insanity defense.

John Pellegrin said at a hearing Tuesday Lindsey Lowe was in "an extremely disassociative state" at the end of her pregnancy. But he said it is too early to make a decision on the defense.

"Some people are subject to having onset of mental illness during pregnancy," Pellegrin said.

Investigators say Lowe delivered the twins Sept. 12 at the home she shared with her parents in Hendersonville and killed them. Her father found one body in a laundry basket, and police officers found the second.

Hendersonville Police Detective Steve Malach testified DNA tests showed the twins were conceived during a sexual encounter Lowe had with a man other than her fiance.

Lowe is free on $250,000 bail. Prosecutors asked a judge to jail her because of a drug test that showed the presence of an anti-anxiety medication in her system, but Grand Sessions Judge Jim Hunter postponed a decision until next week.
