Newborn girl found at Chicago-area church

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Oct. 24 (UPI) -- A 7-pound newborn baby girl found abandoned at a suburban Chicago church in a green canvas shopping bag with a teddy bear is in good health, police said.

The unnamed Asian girl, wrapped in an orange bath towel, was found Sunday on top of a car parked in front of the Gospel Presbyterian Church in Schaumburg, Ill., near O'Hare International Airport, police said.

Church members first thought the bag contained only the bear and towel, but later heard noise and realized they had a baby on their hands and called police, Schaumburg police said.

The infant appeared to have been carried to full term, but was not believed born in a hospital due to the length of her umbilical cord, WBBM-TV, Chicago, reported.

Police took the newborn to a hospital for examination.

State welfare officials will take custody of the infant once she is released, officials said.

Illinois' "safe haven" law lets parents abandon children at hospitals, police stations, fire stations or emergency medical facilities with no prosecution.

Churches aren't included among state-approved locations, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Authorities sought additional information about the baby.
