Union blocks stage collapse search warrant

INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- A stagehands' union is contesting a search warrant issued to Indiana officials investigating a deadly stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair, officials said.

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 30 is contesting the warrant for training and employment records involving stagehand Nathan Byrd, who was killed in the Aug. 13 collapse. The Indianapolis Star said at least nine other union workers also were injured in the collapse that killed seven people and injured more than 40.

The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration tried to search the union hall last week but were turned away, the newspaper said. Investigators also want to interview union workers who assembled the stage rigging.

Union lawyer William Groth said the union is not subject to IOSHA's jurisdiction, but the agency said it is standard practice to investigate not only the employer but all the companies and organizations that have a stake in worker safety.
