GREENSBORO, N.C., Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Sen. John Edwards says he sees no conflict of interest for a new attorney defending him against illegal campaign contribution charges.
In a letter submitted to the court, the North Carolina Democrat who twice ran for president, says he is aware his new lawyer, Abbe Lowell, previously represented two possible witnesses in his federal case and doesn't see it as a problem, Politico reported Tuesday.
"Even if this representation were a conflict of interest (which I do not believe it to be), after consultation with attorneys other than Mr. Lowell, I waive any such conflict," Edwards said.
Lowell, along with two other attorneys -- Christopher Man and James Cooney III -- are defending Edwards against allegations he knowingly accepted illegal campaign contributions from donors who were also financially supporting his mistress Rielle Hunter and their son.
Lowell previously represented Edwards' political aide, Harrison Hickman, and Lisa Blue -- the widow of one of the donors -- in cases related to the contributions.
