Medical marijuana convention-goers warned

DETROIT, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Prosecutors and police say a law that makes it illegal to use marijuana in public places would be enforced at a two-day medical marijuana convention in Detroit.

The Detroit Free Press reported the convention, which started Saturday at Bert's Warehouse Theatre, would feature an "outdoor medicating section," organizers say.

New York magazine High Times was sponsoring the High Times Cannabis Cup, which includes a competition for the best marijuana.

"We're doing this entirely on private property -- the medication area will be sealed off -- and only people with [state medical marijuana registry] cards will be allowed in there," High Times Executive Editor Dan Skye said.

But the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office had a warning for those attending.

"It's against the law in Michigan to use marijuana in a public place," prosecutor's office spokeswoman Maria Miller said. "This is true even if you are the holder of a medical marijuana card," as cardholders should get the drug only from their state-registered caregivers.

"We would caution the public attending this event to be mindful of the law because it will be enforced without exception," Miller said.

"We will be monitoring this, and all laws will be enforced," Detroit Assistant Police Chief Chester Logan added.
