BARLETT, Tenn., Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Herman Cain, the former Godfather's Pizza chief executive and Republican presidential hopeful, said he raised $2.8 million in the third quarter.

The Washington Post reported Cain's campaign has $1 million cash on hand.

Cain announced his fundraising total during a campaign appearance in Tennessee Friday and said the campaign has no debt.

He lags well behind two other front-runners in the Republican race -- former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who raised more than $14 million during the quarter, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who raised more than $17 million.

Both candidates have an estimated $15 million cash on hand.

Cain gained considerable momentum near the end of the quarter, and his victory in the Florida straw poll came with a week left in the quarter. The Post said Cain is now in a statistical tie with Romney for the lead in the GOP race.
