PROVIDENCE, R.I., Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Law enforcement officials say they won't comment on rumors a well-known reputed mob figure in Rhode Island has turned government snitch.
Robert "Bobby" DeLuca Sr., known for decades as an alleged major player in New England organized crime scene, seems to have disappeared, The Providence (R.I.) Journal reported Monday
A recent indictment of four alleged mobsters and mob associates says several "made members" of the mob have cooperated with them in their investigation, fueling rumors DeLuca is now working for the Justice Department.
But U.S. Attorney Peter F. Neronha has refused to identify any of the government witnesses and a spokesman for the federal prosecutor had no comment when the newspaper inquired about DeLuca's whereabouts.
The prosecutors said the witnesses would testify about secret mob initiation ceremonies, something DeLuca is considered an expert about, the newspaper said.
In 1996, DeLuca was sentenced to more than 10 years in federal prison for his role in the shakedown of a Rhode Island businessman and alleged mob associate. He returned to Rhode Island after his release but hasn't been seen recently at his home or usual haunts, the newspaper said.
