WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- The Tea Party Express endorsed Indiana Treasurer Richard Mourdock in his challenge to U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar, seen as a target of Tea Party activists in 2012.
During the weekend Mourdock picked up the support of Hoosiers for a Conservative Senate, a coalition of anti-Lugar Indiana Tea Party groups, and Citizens United, a conservative group in Washington, The Hill reported.
"We are proud to endorse Richard Mourdock for U.S. Senate. For far too long, Sen. Lugar has compromised the basic principles of fiscal responsibility that the Tea Party represents," said Tea Party Express Chairwoman Amy Kremer. "As his voting record tracked increasingly to the left, it became clear it was time for Lugar to be replaced."
Kremer said Mourdock is a "principled conservative with an impressive record of fighting for constitutionally limited government."
Lugar, R-Ind., was first elected to the Senate in 1976. He is seeking a seventh term in the Senate.
