Boy who killed parents gets 7 years

BURLINGTON, Colo., Sept. 29 (UPI) -- A 13-year-old Colorado boy who killed his parents and injured two siblings last year was sentenced to 7 years in juvenile detention.

In court Wednesday, the boy pleaded guilty as a juvenile to first-degree murder and other charges as part of a plea agreement offered by 13th Judicial District Attorney Bob Watson, The Denver Post reported.

To have the boy sentenced as a juvenile, Watson provided evidence such as a photograph of the sandbox the boy was playing in before he killed his parents.

"This is what he was doing in the minutes before," Watson said. "This is clearly not the actions of mature person."

The boy was accused of shooting his parents, Marilyn Long, 51, and her husband, Charles, 50, and stabbing two younger siblings Ethan, 9, and Sarah, 5 at their Burlington, Colo., home on March 1.

"Every time I look at Ethan and Sarah's scars, I'm reminded of this tragedy," said Wally Long, Charles Long's older brother. "I think the biggest tragedy is the sentence being handed down today."
