TUCSON, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- The man charged in the Tucson shooting spree that killed six people and wounded 13, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, faces a competency hearing in Arizona.

Jared Loughner is expected to be at the hearing Wednesday in Tucson that is to decide whether he should remain jailed in Missouri or if he is competent enough to stand trial, CNN reported.

Loughner is charged in the Jan. 8 shooting rampage outside of a supermarket in Tucson that left six people dead, including a child and a federal judge. Thirteen others were wounded, including Giffords, D-Ariz.

He pleaded not guilty.

Last month, federal authorities asked for more time to try to restore his competency, saying he was unable to stand trial. He was diagnosed as schizophrenic and placed on suicide watch.

He has been incarcerated at a federal prison in Springfield, Mo., since May, after a federal appeals court said he could be forcibly medicated despite objections of Loughner and his lawyers.
